Bruce Engineered vs. Solid Hardwood
Bruce makes both solid and engineered hardwood, and the right one depends on your subfloor, the room, and how you want to care for it. Because each is built differently, here is how they compare — and our team is glad to help you choose.
Solid Hardwood
3/4″ & 5/16″
A single piece of real wood. A 3/4″ solid floor can be sanded and refinished several times (typically four to six over its life), so it can last for generations.
- Install: nail or staple down
- Grade: on or above grade (not below)
- Best for: main and upper floors, long-term homes
Engineered Hardwood
3/8–1/2″
A genuine hardwood top layer bonded to a stable plywood/HDF core. That cross-layered build resists the expansion and contraction caused by humidity, so it performs in more rooms.
- Install: nail, glue, or float (some click-lock)
- Grade: below, on, or above grade
- Best for: basements, concrete subfloors, wide planks
In short, choose solid when you want a floor you can refinish again and again on a wood subfloor above grade, and engineered when you need extra stability — over concrete, in a basement, or in a wide-plank look. Either way, every Bruce floor here is real hardwood.
Bruce Hardwood Thickness Options
Bruce Hardwood Floors come in several thicknesses, and the thickness affects how a floor installs and whether it can be refinished. The options across the Bruce lines we carry include:
3/8" engineered
7/16" engineered
1/2" engineered
9/16" engineered
3/4" solid
As a rule of thumb, the thick 3/4″ solids (lines like American Treasures, Dundee, Manchester, and Waltham) can be sanded and refinished the most, while the engineered lines from 3/8″ to 1/2″ trade some refinishing for greater stability and wider planks. Not sure which thickness fits your subfloor? Just ask us.
Dogwood & Dogwood Pro
Dogwood is Bruce’s breakthrough densified wood — 100% real hardwood transformed with heat and pressure into a denser, harder floor. The result is 4× more scratch-resistant and 6× more dent-resistant than typical hardwood: oak’s Janka hardness jumps from about 1360 to roughly 3000, and hickory climbs past 3500. It’s built to shrug off pet nails, kids, and heavy traffic. Every board also includes Hydropel™ water-resistant technology (resists topical water for up to 8 hours) and a Cleantivity™ antimicrobial finish that inhibits odor-causing bacteria, mold, and mildew. Dogwood is made in the USA and backed by a 50-year residential / 10-year commercial warranty.

Wood Species in Bruce Hardwood
Most Bruce Hardwood Floors are American oak, but several lines feature other species, each with its own look and hardness. Here is a quick guide to help you choose.
Oak (Red & White)
The backbone of the Bruce line. Strong, with a prominent grain that takes stain beautifully and hides everyday wear — a classic, do-anything hardwood.
Hickory
One of the hardest domestic woods, with dramatic grain and color variation. Therefore it is a great pick for busy households, kids, and pets.
Maple
Smooth, fine, and uniform. Consequently it lends a clean, contemporary feel, especially in lighter tones.
Walnut
A rich, chocolate-brown American hardwood with an elegant grain. For example, it brings instant warmth to a room.
Birch
A warm, even-grained wood found in select Bruce exotics — a softer, budget-friendly character look.
Professional Bruce Hardwood Installation
Beautiful floors start with expert installation, and because a hardwood floor is only as good as the prep beneath it, our experienced installers handle every detail — checking subfloor moisture and flatness, acclimating your wood, and finishing the trim and transitions. In addition, we install Bruce Hardwood Floors throughout Louisville, KY, Prospect, KY, and Southern Indiana. To get started, schedule a free in-home estimate and we’ll measure, recommend, and quote your project.
How to Clean Bruce Hardwood Floors
Caring for Bruce Hardwood Flooring is simple, and it comes down to the right tools and the right cleaner. Bruce floors carry a urethane finish, so the rules below apply to both the solid and engineered lines we sell. Above all, remember one thing: water and wood don’t mix.
Do
- Sweep, dust-mop, or vacuum weekly — use the bare-floor setting and a brush or felt head (a wand attachment is ideal).
- Deep-clean with Bruce® Hardwood & Laminate Floor Cleaner, a pH-neutral cleaner made for hardwood.
- Spray cleaner onto the floor or a microfiber / terry swivel-head mop, then wipe with the grain.
- Wipe up spills the moment they happen with a soft, dry cloth.
- Use breathable doormats and area rugs (no rubber or vinyl backing) and felt pads under furniture.
- Trim pet nails and protect the floor from direct sunlight with shades or UV film.
Don’t
- Never clean with water or a steam mop — this can permanently damage the floor and void the warranty.
- Don’t use a vacuum with a beater bar or hard head.
- Avoid ammonia, bleach, detergents, wax, polishes, oil soaps, and abrasive cleaners.
- Skip vinegar and other acidic cleaners — they dull modern finishes over time.
- Don’t let excess cleaner sit; dry any extra with a clean towel.
- Don’t drag heavy furniture or wear spike heels across the floor.
Touch-ups & refresh: for minor scratches, a Bruce® Touch-Up Kit blends with your floor color; to revive larger worn areas, Bruce® Fresh Finish™ adds a fresh layer of shine and protection. One note: a few specialty oiled floors should not use the standard Bruce cleaner, since it can lift the oil — the Bruce lines we carry are urethane-finished, but if you’re ever unsure, ask us and we’ll confirm the right product.
Ideal Humidity for Hardwood Floors
Wood is a natural material, so it takes on and releases moisture with the air around it — expanding when the air is humid and contracting when it’s dry. That’s why keeping your home’s humidity steady is the single best thing you can do for any hardwood floor. As a rule, aim to keep indoor relative humidity between about 30% and 50% year-round, with room temperatures in a comfortable 60–80°F range.
Too Dry
Winter
When forced-air heat dries the house out below ~30%, boards lose moisture and shrink. Consequently you may see thin gaps between planks, along with the occasional crack or squeak.
- Run a whole-home or room humidifier
- Add houseplants or water trays near vents
Too Humid
Summer
When humidity climbs above ~50%, boards absorb moisture and swell. As a result you may notice cupping (edges rising) or a tight, crowded look as planks press together.
- Run your A/C or a dehumidifier
- Use exhaust fans in kitchens and baths
Why it matters here: Louisville, Prospect, and Southern Indiana swing from dry, heated winters to humid summers, so homes here benefit from a little humidity management in both seasons. Keeping things stable — rather than chasing one perfect number — is what keeps a floor flat, tight, and beautiful for the long haul. We’re happy to talk through the best setup for your home and which floors handle moisture swings best.
