Somerset Hardwood Flooring Louisville KY | Carpet Selections
Somerset Solid vs. SolidPlus® Engineered
Somerset makes both solid and engineered hardwood floors, and the right one depends on your subfloor, the room, and how you want to care for it. Of course, both are 100% real hardwood finished with Somerset’s Ultimate™ UV-cured aluminum-oxide/urethane — so here is how they compare, and why hardwood installation method matters for each.
Solid Hardwood
3/4″
A single 3/4″ piece of real wood that can be sanded and refinished several times over its life, so it can last for generations. Offered in the Character and Classic collections.
- Install: nail or staple down
- Grade: on or above grade (not below)
- Best for: main and upper floors, long-term homes
SolidPlus® Engineered
1/2″
A genuine hardwood top layer over an 8-ply cross-layered core (3mm wear layer). That build resists humidity-driven movement, so it performs in more rooms — and it’s the only way Somerset offers the widest planks.
- Install: nail, glue, or float
- Grade: below, on, or above grade
- Best for: basements, concrete subfloors, wide planks
In short, choose solid 3/4″ when you want hardwood floors you can refinish again and again on a wood subfloor above grade; on the other hand, choose SolidPlus® engineered when you need extra stability — over concrete, in a basement, or in a wide plank. Either way, our crews handle the hardwood installation, and every Somerset floor here carries a 50-Year Finish Wear / Lifetime Structural warranty.
Character Collection — Hickory
Natural beauty means natural variations. To begin with, hickory is one of the hardest North American hardwoods, and in the Character grade Somerset leans into its drama — expect generous color variation, mineral streaking, and knots from board to board. Solid: 3/4″ in 3-1/4″, 4″ & 5″. SolidPlus® engineered: 1/2″ in 3-1/4″ & 5″. Eased edge/end, Ultimate™ UV-cured finish.
Classic Collection — Oak
Oak, meanwhile, is the most popular choice for hardwood floors in America — strong, stable, and endlessly versatile. In the Classic grade, Somerset selects clean, even-grained boards with gentle, consistent color for a calm, traditional look. Solid: 3/4″ in 2-1/4″ & 3-1/4″ strip (eased edge, square end). SolidPlus® engineered: 1/2″ in 3-1/4″ & 5″. Ultimate™ UV-cured finish.
Classic Character Collection — White Oak
By contrast, the Classic Character collection takes white oak and leans into its natural personality — more visible knots, mineral streaks, and color movement than the clean, even Classic grade. The result is a warmer, more lived-in floor that still reads refined. Solid: 3/4″ in a wide 5″ board. SolidPlus® engineered: 1/2″ in 3-1/4″ & 5″ (3mm wear layer, 8-ply). Eased edge/end, Ultimate™ UV-cured finish.
Color Strip & Color Plank — Same Colors, Different Board
Somerset’s Color Strip and Color Plank collections are oak floors that share the exact same seven stains — so you can pick a color first and then choose the board format that fits your room. The difference is width and construction, not color. Color Strip is the classic narrow strip; Color Plank is the wider, more modern board and the only one of the two also offered as engineered.
The width difference, board by board. This is the main thing that sets the two apart. Color Strip is “strip” flooring — boards under 3 inches wide — while Color Plank is “plank” flooring, meaning 3 inches and wider. Narrow strips read busier and more traditional because you see more seams per square foot; wider planks read calmer and more contemporary, showing off more of each board’s grain.
Color Strip widths (solid only):
3-1/4″
Color Plank widths (solid and engineered):
5″ solid
3-1/4″ engineered
5″ engineered
So the widest you can go in Color Strip is 3-1/4″; Color Plank starts at 3-1/4″ and goes up to 5″. The one overlap is 3-1/4″ — you can get that exact width in either collection, but only Color Plank offers it as engineered (and only Color Plank reaches the wider 4″ and 5″ solid boards). If you want anything wider than 3-1/4″, that’s Color Plank.
Color Strip
Solid 3/4″
Traditional narrow-strip oak — the tighter board scale that suits classic and historic homes. Solid only, so it can be refinished again and again.
- Widths: 2-1/4″ & 3-1/4″ (narrow strip)
- Profile: eased edge, square end
- Construction: solid only
- Install: nail or staple, on/above grade
- Carton: 25 sf
Color Plank
Solid & Eng.
Wider boards for a more current, open look — and available as SolidPlus® engineered, so it installs over more subfloors, including concrete and below grade.
- Solid widths: 4″ & 5″ (eased end)
- Engineered widths: 3-1/4″ & 5″ (1/2″, 8-ply)
- Construction: solid or engineered
- Install: nail/staple, glue, or float
- Carton: 25 sf solid / 40 sf engineered
Both share an eased-edge profile and Somerset’s Ultimate™ UV-cured aluminum-oxide/urethane finish, with a 50-Year Finish Wear / Lifetime Structural warranty. The quick rule: pick Color Strip for a traditional narrow-board look on a wood subfloor above grade, and Color Plank when you want a wider board or need engineered stability. Color Strip & Color Plank — Oak Colors
These seven stains are offered across both Color Strip and Color Plank, on red and white oak — from clear Natural Red Oak and Natural White Oak through warm Golden Oak, Gunstock and Mocha, to deep Metro Brown and weathered grey Smoke. Choose your color here, then tell us whether you’d like it as a narrow strip or a wider plank.
Euro Wide Plank — Somerset’s Widest Board
The Euro Wide Plank collection is Somerset’s premium, extra-wide white oak — a single sweeping 8.25″-wide board in lengths up to 86″ for the long, open, European look. It’s built on Somerset’s SolidPlus® XP engineered platform with a thicker 3.5mm wear layer, so you get the widest, longest plank in the lineup with the stability to install it almost anywhere — including over concrete and below grade.
Construction
9/16″
- Thickness: 9/16″ (nominal)
- Width: 8.25″ extra-wide plank
- Wear layer: 3.5mm (thicker XP build)
- Lengths: random, up to 86″
- Species: White Oak
Finish & Install
XP Eng.
- Finish: Ultimate™ UV-cured aluminum-oxide/urethane
- Profile: eased edge, eased end
- Install: nail, glue, or float
- Grade: below, on, or above grade
- Carton: 30 sf
How it compares to our other wide white oak: the Classic Character collection tops out at a 5″ board, while Euro Wide Plank stretches to 8.25″ wide and 86″ long on a thicker XP wear layer — the most premium, most dramatic floor Somerset makes. It carries the same 50-Year Finish Wear / Lifetime Structural warranty (5-year finish wear commercial).
Euro Wide Plank Collection — White Oak
Euro Wide Plank shows white oak at its most expressive — from the pale, almost-whitewashed Snow and soft Sand through warm Natural and Summer to the deep, smoky Bark and Winter. The extra-wide 8.25″ board puts more of that grain on display in every plank. SolidPlus® XP engineered throughout, 9/16″ thick with a 3.5mm wear layer.
Hand Crafted — Hand-Scraped Texture
The Hand Crafted collection is Somerset’s textured, hand-scraped hardwood — each board is surface-worked so the floor has real dimension and a warm, time-worn look that hides everyday wear better than a smooth finish. It’s offered on the SolidPlus® engineered platform across multiple species, and it’s the one collection available in random widths for an authentic, old-world plank layout.
Construction
1/2″
- Thickness: 1/2″ (nominal)
- Widths: 3-1/4″, 4″, 5″ (random or fixed)
- Wider: 6″ in Hickory & Maple, 7″ in Oak
- Core: 3mm wear layer, 8 plies
- Species: Hickory, Maple & Oak
Finish & Install
Scraped
- Surface: hand-scraped texture
- Finish: Ultimate™ UV-cured aluminum-oxide/urethane
- Profile: eased edge, square end
- Install: nail, glue, or float (on/above/below grade)
- Carton: 38 sf random / 40 sf fixed
In short, choose Hand Crafted when you want texture and a rustic, lived-in character that a smooth floor can’t give you — with the option of mixed random-width planks. Like every Somerset floor here, it carries a 50-Year Finish Wear / Lifetime Structural warranty (5-year finish wear commercial).
Hand Crafted Collection — Hand-Scraped
Hand-scraping brings out warm, weathered tones, so the Hand Crafted palette runs rich and rustic — from soft, greyed Winter Wheat through warm Antique Bronze and Rustic Autumn to deep Royal Brown and smoky Vintage Oak. The textured surface catches light differently across every board. SolidPlus® engineered, 1/2″ thick with a 3mm wear layer.
High Gloss — A Formal, Polished Shine
The High Gloss collection is solid oak finished to a rich, reflective shine — the most formal, dressed-up look Somerset offers. That mirror-like surface adds depth and elegance to traditional and formal rooms, and because it’s solid 3/4″ hardwood, it can be sanded and refinished over its lifetime. It comes in the classic 2-1/4″ and 3-1/4″ strip widths.
Construction
3/4″
- Thickness: 3/4″ solid (nominal)
- Widths: 2-1/4″ & 3-1/4″ strip
- Lengths: random, up to 6-1/2′
- Species: Oak
- Carton: 25 sf
Finish & Install
Gloss
- Sheen: high-gloss, reflective
- Finish: Ultimate™ UV-cured aluminum-oxide/urethane
- Profile: eased edge, square end
- Install: nail or staple, on/above grade
- Warranty: 50-Year Finish Wear / Lifetime Structural
A quick care note: a glossy finish makes a floor look stunning, but it also shows dust and footprints more readily than a satin sheen — so it’s best suited to formal spaces rather than high-traffic mudrooms. Like every Somerset floor here, it carries a 50-Year Finish Wear / Lifetime Structural warranty (5-year finish wear commercial).
High Gloss Collection — Oak
The High Gloss palette keeps to timeless oak tones that suit a formal, polished floor — clear Natural Red Oak and Natural White Oak, warm golden Butterscotch, and rich amber Gunstock. The reflective finish deepens each color and plays beautifully with light. Solid 3/4″ oak in traditional strip widths.
Homestyle — Everyday Solid Oak
The Homestyle collection is Somerset’s straightforward, everyday solid oak — real 3/4″ hardwood in classic strip widths, finished simply and priced to be the practical choice for a whole-home install. It’s the same Appalachian oak and the same durable Ultimate™ finish as the rest of the lineup, in a clean, no-frills package. Because it’s solid, it can be sanded and refinished over the years.
Construction
3/4″
- Thickness: 3/4″ solid (nominal)
- Widths: 2-1/4″ & 3-1/4″ strip
- Lengths: random, up to 6-1/2′

Finish & Install
Satin

- Profile: eased edge, eased end
- Install: nail or staple, on/above grade
- Best for: whole-home solid oak on a budget
- Warranty: 50-Year Finish Wear / Lifetime Structural
How it compares to our other solid oak: Homestyle has eased ends all around for a softly defined plank look and is built to be the value choice, while Classic and High Gloss use a square end and a more premium presentation. All carry the same 50-Year Finish Wear / Lifetime Structural warranty (5-year finish wear commercial).
Homestyle Collection — Oak
Homestyle offers a full range of everyday oak tones — clear Natural Red Oak and Natural White Oak, warm Butterscotch and Gunstock, earthy Provincial, deep Metro Brown, and cool grey Charcoal — so you can match almost any room without stepping up in price. Solid 3/4″ oak in 2-1/4″ and 3-1/4″ strip.
Wide Plank — Bold, Wide Engineered Hardwood Floors
The Wide Plank collection delivers Somerset hardwood floors at their most dramatic — broad 6″ and 7″ boards that make a real design statement. Moreover, every plank is built on the SolidPlus® engineered platform, so these wide hardwood floors stay flat and stable where solid wood might not. As a result, you can enjoy a wide-board look almost anywhere in the home, and our team can handle the hardwood installation from subfloor prep to the final row.
Construction
1/2″
- Thickness: 1/2″ (nominal)
- Widths: 6″ and 7″ wide plank

One note on species: Somerset keeps each board to a single species rather than mixing them, so the grain stays consistent across your floor. In this collection, the hickory colors come in a 6″ width while the white oak runs a full 7″. Furthermore, like all of our Somerset hardwood floors, the Wide Plank collection carries a 50-Year Finish Wear / Lifetime Structural warranty (5-year finish wear commercial).
Wide Plank Collection — Hickory & White Oak
These wide hardwood floors pair rich character with a clean, low-gloss finish. To begin, warm Hickory Toast shows off hickory’s lively grain, while deeper Hickory Saddle adds a toasted, rustic warmth. In addition, clear Natural White Oak brings the calm, contemporary 7″ look so many homeowners want today. SolidPlus® engineered throughout, 1/2″ thick with a 3mm wear layer.
